How are you defining success in business right now?

For a long time, success was painted with a narrow brush: make six figures, be booked out, grow a team, hit insert vanity metric here. But here’s the truth: defining success looks different for each of us. And if we’re not careful, we end up chasing someone else’s version of it, only to find ourselves burned out, overwhelmed, and disconnected from the life we actually wanted to build.

So instead of asking, “How successful does this look?”—let’s ask, “How successful does this FEEL?”

Let’s break down the four pillars of success I use with my coaching clients. When these four areas are in alignment, you’re not just building a business—you’re building a life that’s sustainable, fulfilling, and deeply yours.

Pillar #1: Finances

Yes, money matters. But not just for the sake of stacking dollar signs.

  • You’re making enough to feel comfortable. Your bills are paid, you’re not stressed about every invoice, and there’s breathing room.
  • You’re able to give back. Whether that’s through financial donations, volunteering, or supporting causes that matter to you, you can contribute to your community.

Financial success isn’t about hitting arbitrary revenue goals. It’s about being resourced enough to live your life and support the people and causes you care about.

Pillar #2: Security

Security is the backbone of sustainable success. It’s the difference between riding an emotional rollercoaster every month and feeling grounded in your business.

  • You can rely on your income. You have steady leads, dependable systems, and pricing that makes sense.
  • You’re prepared for the unexpected. Whether that’s slow seasons, illness, or taking time off to be with your family, you have a plan (and savings) in place.

True security in your business doesn’t come from hustle. It comes from strategy.

Pillar #3: Satisfaction

You didn’t start your business to be miserable. Yet too many entrepreneurs find themselves trapped doing work that no longer lights them up. Or worse – working with clients who drain their energy.

  • You love the work you do. It feels creative, aligned, and meaningful.
  • You love who you work for. Your clients respect your boundaries, appreciate your talents, and you leave calls feeling energized – not exhausted.

Satisfaction is about reconnecting with your “why,” and making sure your business still reflects it.

Pillar #4: Lifestyle

This is the part that often gets left behind, especially when you’re in growth and hustle mode. But what’s the point of running your own business if you never get to enjoy the life you wanted?

  • You have time outside your business. Time for rest, for hobbies, for the people you love.
  • You have the energy to enjoy that time. You’re not constantly drained or checked out.

Success isn’t just about what your business brings in. It’s about what your business gives back to your life.

Defining Success for Yourself

Maybe you’re financially thriving, but you’re exhausted and resentful of your workload. Or maybe your calendar looks open and peaceful, but you’re anxious every month about making ends meet. If even one of these pillars feels shaky, it’s worth paying attention.

Defining success that’s only measured in numbers is a shaky kind of success. But success built on finances, security, satisfaction, and lifestyle? That’s the kind that lasts.
